Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov , also spelled Élie Metchnikoff,[2][note 1] was a zoologist from the Russian Empire of Moldavian[3][4][5][6][7] noble ancestry[8] best known for his pioneering research in immunology.[9][10][11][12] He and Paul Ehrlich were jointly awarded the 1908 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "in recognition of their work on immunity".[13] <
